Environment Canada has issued a flash freeze alert for the City of Winnipeg and much of southern Manitoba.

A rapid drop in temperature is expected this afternoon, causing wet or slushy surfaces to freeze quickly, creating hazardous conditions on roadways and sidewalks.

“We’ve got those temperatures above freezing right now,” says Terri Lang, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada (EC). “It’s nice, so we get a break from those cold temperatures. However, we are expecting a cold front to move through and temperatures are expected to take a nosedive and go below freezing.”

Environment Canada says after mild temperatures and some rainfall with melting snow, a strong cold front will bring temperatures well below zero beginning this morning in southwestern Manitoba and reaching the Red River Valley and southeastern Manitoba by this evening

“It’s going to freeze the roads up really quickly from all that melting that took place, maybe a little shot of rain or snow. It’s going to freeze quickly and make those roads really icy.”

Officials are urging residents to exercise caution while travelling, as streets and sidewalks may become icy and slippery.

Flash freeze warnings are issued when temperatures are expected to rapidly drop below zero, causing water from rain or melted snow to quickly freeze on streets and sidewalks.
