A 31-year-old man has been arrested following a Downtown Winnipeg assault over the weekend.
Officers were travelling westbound on Portage Avenue near Donald Street around 1:30 p.m. on January 4, when they observed a man physically assaulting a woman and knocking her to the ground. WPS quickly got involved and stopped the assault before arresting the uncooperative suspect.
One officer deployed a conductive energy weapon during the arrest to safely take the suspect into custody.
The female victim suffered minor injuries but did not require medical attention.
The assault appears to be random and unprovoked as the suspect and victim were not known to each other.
A 31-year-old man has been charged with assault and is being held in police custody awaiting further disposition.
