A 40-year-old man is in custody after three women were assaulted while walking to work through the Winnipeg Skywalk system.

The Winnipeg Police Service said in a press release that the women were randomly assaulted last Thursday between 6:30 and 6:45 a.m.

The first incident happened at around 6:30 a.m. Police say a woman was walking through the Millennium Library Skywalk when a man grabbed her and attempted to steal her backpack. She yelled at him and fled to safety. She was slightly injured, but did not require medical attention.

Shortly afterward, a second woman was walking through the Graham Avenue Skywalk when a man confronted her. He yelled obscenities and pushed her against a railing before taking off.

A short time later, a third woman, who was also walking along the Graham Avenue Skywalk, was confronted by a man who threatened to stab her. He slapped her coffee cup out of her hand, picked it up and threw it at her. He also pushed her.

The woman was able to defend herself before the suspect fled.

Winnipeg police were notified of the assaults, and foot patrol officers quickly identified and located the suspect in the Skywalk near St. Mary Avenue.

A 40-year-old man from Winnipeg is facing several charges, including robbery, assault x2 and assault with a weapon.

He remains in custody.
