Manitobans are being warned that they are in for another round of wild winter weather.
Blowing snow and blizzard conditions are expected to impact much of southern and central Manitoba early Sunday through the evening, Environment Canada says, as a fast-moving winter system brings fresh snow, strong winds and limited visibility.
Winnipeg, much of southern Manitoba under blowing snow advisory
Environment Canada has issued a yellow level advisory for blowing snow covering a broad swath of southern and central Manitoba, including the City of Winnipeg and surrounding areas.
Poor visibility in snow and blowing snow is likely beginning early Sunday morning and continuing through the day as northwesterly winds gust up to 70 km/h. Additional snow accumulation is expected as the clipper system moves through the region, and road closures are possible.
Motorists are advised to postpone non-essential travel, use headlights, reduce speed and maintain a safe following distance.
Blizzard warnings issued for part of Red River Valley
At the same time, orange level blizzard warnings are in effect for parts of the southern Red River Valley and areas southeast of Lake Manitoba.
In these zones, including communities south and east of Winnipeg, Environment Canada warns of widespread near-zero visibility in snow and blowing snow with winds gusting up to 80 km/h.
These conditions are expected to make travel dangerous or impossible at times early Sunday into the evening, with winds easing later in the day.
Both advisories stem from the same incoming system, which will bring several centimetres of fresh snow before stronger winds develop overnight into Sunday.
Environment Canada says that blowing snow advisories are issued when widespread poor visibility is expected in blowing snow, while blizzard warnings indicate conditions with frequent near-zero visibility.
Officials encourage residents to monitor conditions, avoid travel if possible and take precautions to stay safe in the challenging weather.
