Manitoba RCMP are warning motorists that travelling on closed highways is illegal and could result in fines and demerit points, as blowing snow and poor visibility force closures on major routes across the province.
The Trans-Canada Highway between Winnipeg and Sidney was closed Sunday morning due to deteriorating conditions, with RCMP reporting several other highways either closed or experiencing hazardous driving conditions.

Police remind Manitobans that driving on a closed highway is both illegal and dangerous, posing risks to drivers and the emergency crews who may be called to assist after collisions or vehicles sliding off the road.
Over the weekend, Mounties in Portage la Prairie issued 25 tickets to motorists found travelling on closed highways during Friday’s storm. Each offence carries a minimum fine of $298 and two demerit points on a driver’s licence.
With visibility reported as poor in many areas due to blowing snow, RCMP and Environment Canada are continuing to stress caution and preparedness for anyone who must travel through the province.
