All of Manitoba under extreme cold warning as Arctic air swoops in

Manitoba is in for some bone-chilling temperatures over the next few days, prompting Environment Canada to issue an extreme cold warning.

The national forecaster says that dropping temperatures and windy conditions will bring about hazardous wind chills for at least the next three days.

In northern Manitoba, wind chill values could hit -50. Here in southern Manitoba wind chill values are expected to be between -40 and -45, including during the day on Thursday.

“A colder and windier air mass is moving into Manitoba, bringing falling temperatures and wind chill values dropping into the -40 to -45 range,” Environment Canada writes in its warning.

In Winnipeg, temperatures will drop to -31 overnight Wednesday and into Thursday morning. With winds from the northwest at 30 km/h and gusting to 50 km/h, wind chills will be around -43.

On Thursday winds are expected to keep gusting up to 50 km/h at times. With a high of just -23, the wind chill could hit -46.

Meteorologists say wind chill values may improve slightly during daytime hours, but are expected to drop back below -40 each night for the next several nights.
