Manitoba’s Premier says that the province’s capital city isn’t just growing but thriving.
Winnipeg has reached a new milestone, surpassing 850,000 residents and recording the fifth-highest population growth in Canada in 2025.
Premier Wab Kinew and local MLAs toured Canadian Mennonite University this week and took a few moments to speak briefly with students at the school’s Folio Cafe.
Kinew says affordability is a key factor behind the city’s growth. He noted that Winnipeg continues to stand out for its lower cost of living.
Carla Compton, MLA for Tuxedo, praised the city’s cultural offerings. “Winnipeg is a city that has everything,” she said. “We have an amazing arts community that’s accessible at every level, from community theatre to big stage performances, including the symphony, opera and ballet.”
Compton said she is excited to see Winnipeg continuing to grow.
Students at Canadian Mennonite University also shared why they believe more people are choosing the city as home.
An international student from Egypt said Winnipeg stood out for its affordable cost of living and education while researching Canadian cities.
“Winnipeg gives hope for the future,” another student said. “The cost of living makes me believe I can own a home and start a family, and that’s inspiring.”
Students also highlighted the city’s sense of community, often referred to as “Friendly Manitoba.” They said it is common to know your neighbours and feel connected, which they view as a major benefit of living in the city.
Compton and Premier Kinew met with students at Folio Café, describing it as a welcoming place to grab coffee and be part of the local community. Kinew thanked the students for the visit, saying, “We got to meet all you cool people — major win.”
