The Winnipeg Public Library’s first Maker-in-Residence of 2026 is a fibre artist.

Anna Schmidt will take on the position starting next month, using this opportunity to both educate and share her art form with Winnipeggers.

“I am thrilled to have this opportunity to share my passion for this craft,” said Schmidt. “Anyone can transform old textiles into new purposes.”

In 2021, Schmidt, also an educator, created Common Loon Quilts to make fibre arts fun and accessible for everyone.

Schmidt says quilting is a practical way to create art and repurpose textiles.

In her time as Maker-in-Residence, Schmidt, who will operate out of the ideaMILL at Millennium Library, will offer weekly drop-in studio time for Winnipeggers to see her creative process and to learn new skills in fibre arts, sewing, and quilting. She will also offer workshops at other branches during her time.

Schmidt is the first of three makers who will share expertise with the public in 2026. Her term will run from Feb. 4 to  April 30.
