Winnipeggers can now see more up-to-date information on snow-clearing progress before heading out in winter weather, thanks to improvements to the City’s online snow operations map.

The City of Winnipeg has upgraded how it tracks and displays snow clearing on sidewalks, pathways, and bike routes.

Instead of relying on staff to manually enter data at the end of a shift, the map now uses automatic vehicle location technology built into sidewalk-clearing equipment. That means progress is refreshed about every 15 minutes.

Near real-time updates

Mayor Scott Gillingham says this is hopefully a solution to providing residents with more information.

“Winnipeggers want clear, timely information they can rely on,” Gillingham said in a release. “By using automatic vehicle location technology, we’re giving residents near real-time updates on snow-clearing progress so they can plan their trips safely and confidently.”

Councillor Janice Lukes, chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works, noted the upgrade is part of years of improvements to snow removal in the city.

“In my time as a Councillor, I have fought hard for improvements to our snow-clearing efforts,” Lukes said. “Thanks to Mayor Gillingham and Council’s support over the last three years, we’ve greatly enhanced our sidewalk and pathway clearing to make it safer for seniors, children, transit riders, and people with accessibility needs. With this update to our snow-clearing map, we can now update the public in near real-time on those operations.”

How to use the map

Before reporting a missed clearing, the City asks residents to check the map first.

Areas shown in blue indicate crews are still working to clear those roads, sidewalks, or paths.

The map also lets users filter for progress on routes for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists so people can plan their travel according to their needs.
