Environment Canada has issued a yellow-level fog advisory for Winnipeg and much of southern Manitoba, warning of near-zero visibility and hazardous travel conditions.

The advisory, issued at 5:08 p.m. on Thursday, includes Winnipeg and communities across the Red River Valley, stretching from the Interlake through central and southeastern Manitoba.

Environment Canada says areas of near-zero visibility in fog are being reported throughout the Red River Valley. While there may be temporary improvements at times, periods of significantly reduced visibility are expected to persist into late Friday morning.

The impact level is listed as moderate, with high forecast confidence.

Travel is likely to be hazardous in some locations. Motorists are advised to prepare for areas of near-zero visibility, use caution on highways and city streets, and allow extra time to reach their destinations.

Several listeners have already reported extremely poor visibility throughout Winnipeg and on highways across the region late Thursday afternoon.
