One person is dead and another person is in custody following a house fire in West Broadway last week.
The fire broke out just after 6 p.m. Thursday Feb. 12, 2026 in a two-and-a-half-storey house in the 200 block of Young Street.
Heavy black smoke was coming from the home when crews arrived. One person had to be rescued from the home. The remaining occupants had safely self-evacuated before firefighters got to the scene.
Two people were transported to hospital, one in critical condition and one in stable condition. A firefighter was also injured and taken to hospital in stable condition. The person in critical condition, 68-year-old Gregory George Thomas, has since died of their injuries.
Investigators learned that the fire had been deliberately set.
The Homicide Unit has has taken over the investigation.
A 40-year-old man has been arrested and charged with manslaughter and arson.
He remains in custody.
