The NICU at Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre hosted a heartwarming moment last week.
On Feb. 13 at 1 p.m., all 48 babies in the unit were read the same book at the same time, Llama Llama I Love You, either by a parent or a member of the healthcare team.
“According to staff who were present, it was a wonderful five minutes,” said HSC Winnipeg in a post on social media. “So many parents came in to participate and read to their infants, embracing this month’s focus on how reading supports neurodevelopment. Seeing families prioritize this moment was incredibly meaningful.”
Medical and nursing directors, managers and allied health team members even stepped up, taking a break from their busy day to be present and share in this experience.
“It was a team effort. Bedside nurses delayed or shortened their breaks to ensure that every baby had someone reading to them,” said HSC Winnipeg. “That dedication speaks volumes about the heart of our NICU team.”
The books, donated by the Children’s Library, were gifted to every infant as a keepsake from the moment shared.
“What a celebration of teamwork, family partnership, and the power of reading!”
