School addresses concerning threat at Windsor Park Collegiate

Police attended Windsor Park Collegiate on Tuesday after a threat was found in a boys’ washroom, according to a letter sent from the school.

Windsor Park Collegiate says police were called to the school after staff became aware of a concerning threat in one of the boys’ washrooms earlier this week.

According to a letter sent to families by Principal Robbie Mager, the threat was found during the day on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

In the communication shared with the school community, Windsor Park Collegiate officials say they immediately contacted the Winnipeg Police Service, who attended the school to assess the situation. Because the matter is part of an ongoing police investigation, the school said it is limited in the details it can share.

Classes continued as scheduled and the school remained open while police investigated. The letter says the safety and well-being of students and staff is the school’s top priority and that school staff are thankful for the Winnipeg Police Service’s prompt response.

Support available for students and families

Principal Mager acknowledged that situations like this “can be unsettling” for students and families. The letter emphasized that accurate information was being shared so the community would be informed, and reminded families that school safety is a shared responsibility.

Families were encouraged to speak with a trusted adult, such as a teacher, school administrator, student support staff member or parent, if they become aware of information or behaviour that raises concern about safety.

The school also said that its administrators, student services teachers, and divisional clinical services staff are available to provide additional support to students and staff as needed. Parents were urged to reach out to the school team if they feel their child requires additional help in the days ahead.

Several Winnipeg schools have reported threats this month, including St. John’s and Garden City Collegiate.
