Strong winds and freshly fallen snow are making for a hazardous commute Friday.

Strong northwesterly gusts associated with a cold front are sweeping through the province, creating a treacherous situation on highways through most of the day.

Blowing snow advisories and wind warnings are in place. Environment Canada has warned that near-zero visibility should be expected throughout the morning and into the early afternoon.

As a result, many highways were closed, but have since re-opened.

As of 4:30 p.m. the following highways are now re-opened:

  • Highway 23, from Highway 75 to Highway 59,
  • Highway 75, from HWY 100 to USA border.

These closures are due to poor winter driving conditions, due to blowing snow and poor visibility.

Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure reminds motorists that there may not be visible closure signs or gates at locations where roads have been closed. Motorists are encouraged to avoid the closed highways and find another route.
