The age-old question “will March come in like a lion or a lamb?” is a little tough to say this year, according to one weather expert. But one thing is certain: February is going out with a bang.
“A strong cold front rolled through Friday morning,” Scott Kehler, President and Chief Scientist of Weather Logics, says.
“It brought very strong winds and blowing snow to Winnipeg and the Red River Valley through the day Friday. It created some poor travel conditions, especially in the morning.”
Following Friday, Kehler says the weekend will be relatively quiet but cold.

“Temperatures Saturday and Sunday look to be in the minus teens during the day and probably into the minus 20s overnight, but not looking at any more significant weather after that storm Friday. So February will end on a bitter note, and March will start cool but quiet.”
Looking into March, Kehler says the weather will vary. “It will be cold on March 1, but it won’t be really stormy. As we get into the first week of March, temperatures and weather actually look to be pretty up and down, so we could see some pretty warm weather to start the first week of March, but it likely won’t stick around for long. We’re seeing a lot of ups and downs in the forecast, a bit of a roller coaster weather pattern, so we will see some warm weather and cold weather, but neither type of weather will last for very long.”
Kehler says the month of March is typically a transition month. “Usually it starts in more of a winter weather pattern, and then often by the end of March, in many years we get into more spring-like conditions.”
March 2026 looks to follow the typical trend, Kehler says. “I don’t see any sudden arrival of spring at the start of March, but as we get toward mid-month, our normal temperatures really start to rise pretty quickly. So by about March 15, our normal high temperatures are already near the freezing mark and by the end of the month, they’re above freezing.”
While there is no exact prediction when spring will arrive in Manitoba, Kehler says it will get closer as the month goes on.
“I can’t say for sure exactly when spring will arrive, but there’s no question that we will see temperatures becoming more consistently warm as the month goes on.”
