A section of the Nestaweya River Trail will close this week to allow crews to begin necessary maintenance work on the Historic Rail Bridge at the Forks.
Although ice conditions are still great for skating, the Red River portion of the Nestaweya River Trail will need to be closed to allow for the work.
Crews will be working to remove the steel framing that houses the bridge counterweight system, and need to complete the work while the ice remains stable.
While the work is underway, the Assiniboine portion of the trail, from the Forks to Hugo Docks, the Canopy and the upper skating trails will remain open for skating, as long as weather conditions allow.
“The river trail exists because of the care and support of the community that returns to it year after year,” said The Forks in a press release. “As the season begins to shift, safety guides every decision.”
Signage for Trail Together donors will be relocated to the port and remain visible to donors who made the trail possible this year.
Temperatures in Winnipeg are expected to warm up over the week, but should remain cool enough to keep the ice safe.
