Fire crews were kept busy Friday morning battling a fire in the East Elmwood area.

The fire broke out just before 1:30 a.m. in a vacant bungalow in the 300 block of Nairn Avenue.

Heavy smoke and flames were coming from the house when crews arrived. Firefighters were unable to enter the home due to dangerous fire conditions, so they began attacking the fire from the exterior.

When conditions improved, crews moved inside to continue battling the blaze. They were forced out once again as conditions deteriorated. The fire was brought under control around 4:45 a.m.

One firefighter sustained an injury and was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken off duty. He did not require a trip to the hospital.

No other injuries were reported.

The building sustained severe fire, smoke, and water damage, and due to structural concerns and to help locate remaining hotspots, the home will be demolished.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
