A 14-year-old boy is in custody following an assault west of Winnipeg that turned fatal.

On Feb. 24 at around 6:45 p.m., a vehicle pulled up to the Long Plain Detachment of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service with a 26-year-old man who was suffering from serious injuries due to being stabbed.

Officers provided medical care until paramedics arrived. The man was transported to hospital where he died of his injuries.

Officers later learned that a vehicle had stopped at a Long Plain First Nation residence to drop off another passenger. At the same time, a 14-year-old exited the home and confronted the victim about stolen property, while he was still seated in his vehicle. The conversation escalated to a point where the youth got into the vehicle and stabbed the 26-year-old victim.

The 14-year-old boy has been charged with 2nd degree murder. He remains in custody.

The Manitoba First Nations Police Service, along with RCMP Major Crime Services and RCMP Forensic Identification Services, continue to investigate.
