Manitoba RCMP say a woman abducted earlier this week on Pimicikamak Cree Nation has been safely located and the suspect is now in custody.

In an update released Friday afternoon, RCMP said Joshua Paupanekis was taken into custody without incident at approximately 11:15 a.m. after officers were led to a residence in the community.

Police say the 20-year-old female victim was also found at the residence with minor injuries. She was taken to the local nursing station as a precaution.

RCMP say the arrest follows an extensive search effort over the past 24 hours involving dozens of officers from Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Multiple police units were deployed, including a specialized search plane.

Paupanekis had been the subject of a dangerous person alert issued Thursday after RCMP alleged he abducted a woman following a violent incident at a home on Pimicikamak Cree Nation.

Mounties have said that the suspect and victim were known to each other, and police were investigating as an incident of intimate partner violence.

In Friday’s release, RCMP thanked the public and the media for their assistance during the search.

Further details are expected as the investigation continues.
