There’s growing concern after antisemitic graffiti was discovered on the exterior of Kelvin High School, just days after a local synagogue was similarly targeted.
The Jewish Federation of Winnipeg says a swastika was spray-painted on the school Tuesday.
“These incidents follow a disturbing pattern of hate-motivated acts in our city,” said the federation in a statement. “They harm far more than their intended targets, leaving students, families, and entire communities feeling threatened and less safe.”
The federation says symbols like swastikas have no place in schools or anywhere in Winnipeg.
Premier Wab Kinew responded to the incident, stating that hate and intimidation will not be accepted in Manitoba.
“The antisemitic graffiti at Kelvin High School targeted Jewish students and harmed our whole community,” said Kinew. “Antisemitism and hate threaten public safety and go against the values we share.”
He says the government is working with authorities to apply the full force of the law.
The school division and police are responding, and leaders are urging vigilance, saying speaking out together helps keep schools and neighbourhoods safe and welcoming for all.
