The up and down temperatures this week have made for poor conditions on back lanes, prompting the City of Winnipeg to begin a clearing operation Thursday morning.
Drivers and residents have reported large ruts forming in backlanes as vehicles, including garbage trucks, have pushed through previously packed snow.
In many areas, sizable pockets of ice have developed, creating hazardous surfaces for vehicles, pedestrians, and property.
To address the deteriorating conditions, city crews will begin clearing backlanes at 7 a.m. on Thursday, January 15. Officials are asking residents to avoid lane areas where possible to allow crews to work more efficiently and safely.
City crews are expected to focus first on areas with the worst conditions before moving to other neighbourhoods throughout the day.
Environment Canada says another 2 to 4 centimetres of new snow is expected Thursday as temperatures climb above 0 degrees Celsius, only to plunge back into the negative teens by Friday and dip into the minus 20s by Saturday.
