An extreme cold warning has returned for the city of Winnipeg after a short break.

Environment Canada issued the warning Saturday afternoon saying Winnipeg and much of Western Manitoba can expect extreme wind chill values of minus 40 or lower at times this weekend.

Wind chill values are expected to improve slightly throughout the day  and return to extreme levels overnight.

The extreme cold warnings are expected to expand to include all of southern Manitoba later this weekend.

Environment Canada reminds Manitobans that extreme cold puts everyone at risk and that frostbite can occur in minutes.

Anyone who has to work or be outside is encouraged to dress warm and in layers.

Warmer weather ies expected to arrive in southern Manitoba by Friday with a high of minus 14.
