A firefighter is recovering after being injured while battling a fire in the Wolseley area Wednesday evening.

The blaze broke out just before 8 p.m. in a vacant three-storey apartment building on Woodrow Place.

Firefighters quickly responded and were able to get the fire under control about an hour later.

One firefighter was injured at the scene, but did not require a trip to the hospital.

Due to freezing temperatures, the city is asking motorists and pedestrians to use caution when in the area, as water used to fight the fire has frozen over, creating slippery conditions.

City crews are monitoring the situation and have already applied sand and de-icing agents to the roadways and sidewalks.

This is the second time in a year that a fire has broken out in this complex. Crews also responded to the same building in December 2024

Winnipeggers are encouraged to call 9-1-1 if they spot someone actively attempting to get in or remove boards from a vacant building.

If boarded windows or doors have been tampered with, the city asks anyone who witnesses it to call 311 and report the incident.
