Firefighters are battling a house fire in frigid conditions in West St. Paul on Thursday afternoon after large plumes of smoke were reported across the area.

The blaze broke out at a home on Rossmore Avenue, a street that lies inside the Perimeter Highway but is technically part of West St. Paul.

Temperatures were around -30 C with a wind chill of -46 when crews arrived, complicating efforts for firefighters.

Residents and motorists in the area reported seeing smoke while travelling on the North Perimeter Highway.

RCMP have blocked traffic on Rossmore Avenue between McPhillips Street and Cowley Street while emergency responders manage the scene and keep bystanders at a safe distance.

At this time, there is no word on the cause of the fire, and authorities have not yet confirmed whether there are any injuries.
