A former member of Winnipeg’s police force has been sentenced to seven years in prison for offences he pleaded guilty to.

Elston Bostock was charged in Nov. 2025 with multiple offences, including four counts of breach of trust, unlawfully entering a dwelling, obstructing a police officer, obstructing justice, and theft under $5,000.

Allegations agains Bostock lasted for two years between Oct. 2022 until Nov. 2024.

On January 23, 2026, Bostock accepted responsibility for his actions and the impact they have on the public’s trust in the Winnipeg Police Service.

Chief Gene Bowers said in an email release Friday afternoon, “I understand this has shaken public confidence; the Service doesn’t take this knowledge lightly. At a media conference last August, I outlined the steps that have been initiated to restore accountability within the ranks of the Service and rebuild public confidence.”

Bowers says an update of these actions will be shared in March 2026 public meeting of the Winnipeg Police Board. Bowers will be ready to answer any questions about ongoing efforts once the meeting concludes.

“I want residents of Winnipeg to know that the overwhelming majority of members of the WPS serve with pride and professionalism, with the understanding that the actions of Elston Bostock are unacceptable. This case is a stain on our Service’s reputation; one that will serve as a reminder of our responsibility to uphold our values of integrity and accountability,” the statement concluded.
