Manitobans are encouraged to get outside and embrace winter by trying out ice fishing this long weekend.
Feb. 14 to 16 is Winter Family Fishing Weekend, an opportunity for anglers to fish without a licence in the province, except in national parks where a federal angling licence is still required.
“This is a great opportunity for Manitoba families to discover the excitement of ice fishing this long weekend,” said Natural Resources and Indigenous Futures Minister Ian Bushie. “Manitoba offers some of the best ice fishing experiences, and family fishing weekends make those experiences more accessible to Manitobans.”
Anglers must follow all possession limits and size restrictions, including regulations for specific individual waters.
Anglers are also being reminded to clean, drain and dry their ice-fishing gear to help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS).
Anyone participating is encouraged to check ice conditions before travelling on the ice and to dress in weather-appropriate clothing.
In addition to the Winter Family Fishing Weekend, the province is also offering free entry into provincial parks up until April 30.
Vehicle permits are not required, but Snopasses are required for snowmobiles using groomed trails in the parks.
