Man arrested in fatal collision that killed Royal Canoe bassist

A man wanted in connection with a head-on collision near Swan Lake that killed three people, including Royal Canoe bassist Brendan Berg and his partner, Olivia Michalczuk, has been arrested. (Supplied)


A man wanted in connection with a head-on collision near Swan River that killed three people, including Royal Canoe bassist Brendan Berg and his partner, Olivia Michalczuk, has been arrested.

On Jan. 28, Manitoba RCMP issued an arrest warrant for 37-year-old Matthew Govereau. On Feb. 14, Govereau was taken into custody by Winnipeg Police Service officers.

Mounties say the collision occurred when a vehicle drove over the centre line of Highway 10 north of Swan River and hit a parked vehicle. The crash claimed the lives of 42-year-old Brendan Berg and his partner, 31-year-old Olivia Michalczuk and a 29-year-old passenger in the moving vehicle.

Govereau has been charged with 18 offences relating to the crash, including impaired driving causing death x3, dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death x3, careless driving x3, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possessing a prohibited weapon, weapon possession contrary to order x2, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of drugs for purposes of trafficking x3, and possession of a controlled substance.

He remains in custody and is expected to make his first court appearance today.
