Man charged after alleged theft attempt, threats and assault on Winnipeg police

A 37-year-old man is facing charges after attempting to steal from a Winnipeg business and verbally threatening a police officer on Monday evening.

Around 6:30 p.m. on December 30, members of the Foot Patrol Unit were providing community engagement in the Central District. While at a store in the 300 block of Portage Avenue, they were alerted to someone attempting to leave the store without paying for merchandise.

The suspect was placed under arrest, and he verbally threatened to harm one of the officers. For transport purposes, an additional unit attended the scene.

While officers were placing the suspect in the police cruiser, he began to fight and kicked one of the officers in the head. The officer did not require medical attention.

The 37-year-old now faces the following charges:

  • Assault Peace Officer
  • Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm
  • Theft Under $5000

He remains in custody.
