A 36-year-old man is in stable condition after being seriously injured in an early morning machete assault near a downtown Winnipeg shelter.

Police say officers responded just after 12:30 a.m. on Monday to a shelter in the 300 block of Stanley Street for reports of an assault with a weapon.

When they arrived, they found the victim outside with a serious upper-body injury. Officers provided emergency medical care, including the use of multiple tourniquets, before he was transported to hospital by Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service in stable condition.

Investigators say the victim and another man were involved in a verbal dispute outside the shelter. The argument escalated when the suspect allegedly pulled a machete from his backpack and struck the victim before fleeing.

Officers located the suspect a short time later in the 300 block of Princess Street and arrested him. The Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation.

A 33-year-old man is charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon, and carrying a concealed weapon. He remains in custody. Police have not released the names of those involved.
