Manitoba Hydro crews have made good progress on repairs to a transmission line that has left a northern Manitoba community without power since Sunday.

A line crossing the Nelson River snapped over the weekend, causing the outage in Pimicikamak Cree Nation.

“We know how difficult this situation has been for the community and its members,” said Hal Turner, Manitoba Hydro’s Chief Operating Officer. “Work is progressing well on the restoration efforts, and no further revisions to our estimated time of restoration are expected at this point.”

Good weather allowed crews to use helicopters to ferry workers and materials to the location of the line break and make the repairs, and Manitoba Hydro confirmed that they still expect full restoration to be complete by 6 p.m. tomorrow.

A generator has been connected to the community’s water treatment plant, which is now back up and running after water and sewage holding tanks began freezing.

Manitoba Hydro has supplied eight large heaters along with additional generators to run them, for use by the community at their discretion.

“Our employees and local support staff are continuing their efforts to repair the line as safely and as quickly as possible.”

Hydro says the repairs must be completed during daylight hours.

They continue to communicate with Cross Lake/Pimicikamak leadership to provide updates and respond to community questions and concerns.

“We thank the community for their patience and understanding as we work through this difficult repair.”
