Manitoba Hydro is warning Manitobans about a new text message scam circulating ahead of the holidays.

The utility said in a release that the text message claims a Manitoba Hydro bill is due or overdue and provides a link to make payment.

“Manitoba Hydro does send bill reminders via text message, but does not ask for payment online or via phone, text, e-transfer, or
cryptocurrency,” said Manitoba Hydro in a statement.

Manitoba Hydro says it is reminding customers who receive such texts not to click the link and to delete the message.

Earlier this month, Manitoba Hydro alerted customers of a similar scam circulating via email.

Manitoba Hydro asks its customers to verify their accounts by logging into their online account via a web browser or the Manitoba Hydro App. They can also call 1-888-624-9376 (1-888-MBHYDRO).
