Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre Inc. and Harvest Manitoba have partnered to open up the first-of-its-kind Indigenous-led drop-in space that will address food sovereignty in Winnipeg.
The future site of the new facility, named Asihcikan, which means to put an offering in Cree/Ojibwe, will open up in a warehouse on Notre Dame Avenue, between Kate and Lydia Streets.
The 30,000 sq ft building will be home to a community drop-in space, training and cultural programming and office space.
Harvest Manitoba will help establish a free community grocery store in the new building and a food bank to support families in need.
The total cost of this project is $14 million with support from the Government of Canada, the Province of Manitoba, The Winnipeg Foundation, Cargill and United Way Winnipeg.
Construction is expected to be completed this year.
