Oakville opens emergency shelter for stranded highway travellers

The community centre of a small Manitoba community is opening its doors as an emergency shelter to help with stranded travellers on the Trans-Canada Highway on Friday afternoon.

The Oakville Community Centre, located at 625 3rd Avenue in Oakville, has opened as an emergency shelter following the closure of the Trans Canada highway, providing a safe and warm space for travellers and residents affected by current conditions.

The Centre is offering warm shelter, tea, coffee, and drinking water to anyone in need. The facility is open to those who are safely able to travel and are seeking refuge due to the highway shutdown.

Drivers approaching the area are advised to use Highway 13 and turn south toward Oakville if conditions allow.

It’s strongly cautioned against using Highway 331 (3rd Avenue) to enter Oakville, warning that vehicles may become stuck. Instead, motorists should continue further south and use 1st Avenue to access the community safely.

RCMP are urging drivers to avoid unnecessary travel.

Updates will be provided as conditions change.
