Two people were arrested after two officers were allegedly assaulted while trying to break up a fight at a Winnipeg lounge Wednesday evening.
Winnipeg police say they were called to a licensed establishment in the 1100 block of Main St. just before 11 p.m. on Feb. 25, for the reports of a fight involving more than a dozen people.
When officers arrived, they found two people were still actively fighting. A 27-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man allegedly attempted to interfere as officers attempted to break up the fight. Police say the woman kicked one officer and spat at another, while the man tried to prevent officers from detaining one of the people involved.
Both were arrested.
The 27-year-old woman is now facing a number of charges including two counts of assaulting a peace officer. She was released on an appearance notice.
The 25-year-old man is facing a charge of obstructing justice. He was released on an undertaking.
One of the men involved in the fight was detained under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act, and the other released without charges.
No serious injuries were reported.
The Winnipeg Police Service is reminding Winnipeggers not to get involved when officers are attempting to make an arrest, as it may result in criminal charges.
“For everyone’s safety, individuals must not interfere with officers as they carry out their lawful duties,” said the Winnipeg Police Service in a press release.
