Winnipeg firefighters were called back to the same location on Selkirk Avenue twice Sunday after a fire reignited just hours after being brought under control.

The first fire broke out around 1:30 p.m. in a mixed commercial and residential building in the 400 block of Selkirk Avenue.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire quickly, declaring it under control by 2 p.m.

Residents of the building were able to escape without injury and return to their suites once crews left the scene.

Just two hours later, at around 4 p.m., fire crews were called back to the same block.

They attempted to fight the fire from inside the building, but deteriorating conditions forced them to exit the building and attack the fire from the outside.

An aerial ladder has been set up to spray water from above. Firefighters are expected to remain on scene into the night.

The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team was called to the scene to help residents who have been displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
