A 27-year-old man is facing charges after a violent stabbing Wednesday evening at the Walmart on Empress Street.

Winnipeg police say that shortly after 6 p.m. yesterday, a man entered the Walmart on Empress Street, grabbed several clothing items, concealed them under his jacket and attempted to leave the store.

While leaving, he ran into two men he knew of, aged 34 and 41, which led to an argument, unrelated to the theft of clothing.

Police say at this point, the suspect grabbed a nearby fire extinguisher and sprayed it on the two men before emptying the rest of the extinguisher into the cashier area of the store.

The fight then moved to the parking lot, where it escalated, and a knife was pulled. Both men sustained injuries and were transported to the hospital in stable condition.

The suspect fled before police arrived. However, shortly after 11 p.m., officers spotted his vehicle near Alfred Avenue and Salter Street. Police pulled him over and took him into custody. They also seized a knife during his arrest.

A 27-year-old man is facing several charges, including aggravated assault and assault with a weapon x 2. He remains in custody.

Meanwhile, the Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation. The investigation is ongoing.
