Three people are in hospital following a fire early Tuesday morning in the city’s North End.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to an apartment complex on Redwood Avenue near Salter Street shortly after 7:30 a.m.

Smoke was coming from the building when crews arrived and firefighters were made aware that several people were trapped in the complex.

Six residents were rescued through a window, as there was no other way for them to leave the building safely.

The fire was declared under control about  half an hour later.

Eight people were assessed at the scene, with three being transported to hospital in unstable condition.

A bus was provided for temporary shelter for residents.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
