Several people were arrested and are facing charges in connection with an argument that escalated into a violent assault at a St. Vital Community Centre two months ago.

Winnipeg police say that in October, a few men began fighting inside a social event. One of the groups was asked to leave by the organizers. The fight subsequently spilled into the parking lot, and a woman in her 40s attempted to stop it. However, she was punched and knocked unconscious.

As the fight continued, a man in his 30s was stabbed by two men who were known to him.

Two people were arrested in connection with the assault, and four more during a subsequent search warrant.

Members of the Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation and, with help from video surveillance and after speaking to witnesses, they were able to arrest two people in relation to the assault and four more during a search warrant.

On Nov. 1, the Major Crimes Unit, with the assistance of the Tactical Support Team, executed a warrant at a residence in the 300 block of Selkirk Avenue in relation to this investigation.

Five people were taken into custody, and a loaded sawed-off shotgun was seized.

Two men, ages 24 and 54, a 20-year-old woman, and a 16-year-old youth are all facing firearms-related charges.

They were all released on Undertakings.

Meanwhile, a 29-year-old man is facing a long list of charges, including possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm and assault with a weapon.

He remains in custody.

And just last week, on Nov. 29, a 28-year-old man was taken into custody and is facing weapons-related charges.

He was released on an Undertaking.

The investigation is ongoing.
