A 31-year-old woman has been arrested after allegedly setting a fire in her Winnipeg apartment following a dispute with family members.
According to police, West District General Patrol officers were called to an apartment complex in the 1–99 block of Mayfair Place shortly before 6 a.m. on December 12. Officers were responding to a report of a fight and a fire in one of the suites.
Investigators say a resident pulled the building’s fire alarm after setting a mattress on fire inside her suite, prompting a temporary evacuation of the building.
Police located the woman nearby and arrested her without incident. No major injuries were reported.
The Winnipeg Police Service’s Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation and believes the fire was set deliberately after a family dispute.
The woman has been charged with arson with disregard for human life and arson causing damage to property. She was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
